Child Rights Glossary

Alternative Reports: is the reports prepared by non-governmental organizations (civil society organizations) and children’s groups and submitted to the Committee responsible for the supervision of the execution of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).

Declaration: is an agreement, which is not lawfully binding but ethical impact due to being recognized by the international committee.

CRC: United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. This convention is accepted in 1989 by the United Nations General Assembly. Its anniversary, November 20, is celebrated as the “International Children’s Day.”

Committee on the Rights of the Child – Committee: is a group consisted of 18 experts appointed by the signatory states. The members are responsible for the analysis of reports about the execution of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in the name of United Nations (UN).

Right: is the freedom and/or authority, which is distributed neutrally and equally, in other words fairly. Rights; is the authority given by the constitution and the laws to individuals for the protection of their liberties. If a person has a right in an issue, then s/he has the authority to demand the fulfillment of that right from the state or other individuals.

Non-Governmental Organizations (Civil Society Organizations): Institutions which are not parts of the state.

Government: is the organ who assumes the authority for legislate new codes and their execution.

Human Rights: is the idea of universal rights for every human.

Participation: In this document, participation means the existence of a right for an individual to participate the decision making process concerning himself/herself.

Article: is a chapter in the text of a law, convention, agreement, etc., all of which means a distinguished regulation and mostly denoted with separate numbers.

Ratification: Acceptation of a legal document or agreement.

Principle: Moral (ethical) rule. For example: As a principle, I try to use paper, water, and electricity without wasting.

Conclusive Observations: Upon the examination of a country report, the Committee prepares a report for that government to enlist some advises to develop children’s rights in that country This is called as conclusive observation.

Responsible: is an institution, organization, or individual committed to activation and guarantee of the respect to individuals’ rights, protection of their rights.

Convention: A lawfully binding treaty among states.

Signatory State: A country, which ratified a treaty or convention.

Fundamental Rights – Articles: Articles 1 – 41 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. These articles includes entire rights executed for children.
